Dawn and Dusk of Legacies: Java's North Coast Batik

This year, Babaran Segaragunung Culture House will launch its pilot cultural programs, including the Intangible Cultural Expedition. This program invites participants to explore the rich cultural history of batik on Java's north coast through the theme "Dawn and Dusk of Legacies: Java's North Coast Batik." Batik, a prominent cultural tradition in Indonesia, is a key icon of Indonesian identity, with a long historical journey reflected in temple reliefs, ancient texts, and cultural practices. Despite its deep cultural significance, batik is often only superficially understood today, with mass-produced prints affecting traditional practitioners. Over five days, participants will visit Pekalongan, Batang, Lasem, and Tuban to gain diverse perspectives on batik's role in Java's history. Below, we are providing a PDF describing this program in detail.

Our Intangible Cultural Expeditions are designed to accommodate a small group of 2-12 participants. We believe that a smaller group size allows for a more intimate and in-depth exploration of a specific topic, fostering a meaningful connection with the makers and artisans we visit. This program prioritizes depth over breadth, emphasizing the importance of creating meaningful interactions with the people we encounter.

The Intangible Cultural Expedition is scheduled for a set date, but we can accommodate special requests for other dates. If, 30 days before the trip, the number of participants does not reach the minimum of two, we will inform registered participants about possible alternatives to the itinerary, ensuring a meaningful journey even with a smaller group. Please note that this program is educational, focusing on observing a theme through key individuals with whom we have a strong rapport. We have chosen these individuals for their unique perspectives and contributions that align with the theme.

The fees paid by participants go towards compensating our small team, dedicated to creating a knowledge-based program, as well as the makers and artisans for their time and contributions. The funds also support our ongoing research and development for future themes. We do not profit from any sales between participants and the artisans or makers, as we respect them as holders of knowledge rather than mere craft producers. Our mission is to facilitate meaningful cultural exchanges and support the economic well-being of these talented individuals. Please find below the dates of our fixed expedition programs.

Participants have the opportunity to learn directly from master artisans who specialize in this particular style, making it a unique and immersive cultural experience.
In Yogyakarta, rice is a staple and is typically eaten three times a day. The local cuisine features a rich variety of dishes with tempeh and tofu being very popular. Traditional Javanese dishes are characterized by a balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors, with dishes like Gudeg (young jackfruit stew) and Nasi Kucing (small portions of rice with various side dishes) being local favorites.
Yogyakarta, often referred to as Jogja, is considered the cultural heart of Indonesia. It is renowned for its preservation of Javanese traditions and arts, including batik, wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), and traditional dance.
