Art Programs Questions

Art Programs Questions

While both programs explore Indonesian culture, our art programs emphasize the creative process using batik as a medium and are more focused on contemporary artistic practice. Cultural programs, on the other hand, provide a broader understanding of cultural heritage, with hands-on activities like traditional batik-making and other cultural practices. The cultural programs aim to immerse participants in the living traditions of Indonesia.
During a residency program, we offer simple and affordable living accommodations, including options such as a one-bedroom, a large bedroom that can fit up to four people, and a private facility with its own kitchen, working area, and toilet. Please note that our accommodations are basic and not commercial, but we ensure they are well-maintained and hygienic. For pricing, images, or availability, please email us at info@babaransegaragunung.org.
We recommend emailing us with your expectations and goals so we can discuss how best to tailor the residency to your needs as well as give more precise information about the pricing.
Batik is used as a medium because of Agus and Nia’s background and interest from their early stages of artistic practice. Agus comes from a line of batik makers from Solo, and Nia came to Indonesia in the early 80s to continue her study of batik.
Our residency program is designed for individuals with specific projects in mind. While workshops typically last 3-7 days, residencies can range from just over a week to up to a year, depending on the goals of the residency. Artists might spend a week learning from Ismoyo and Nia, then use the studio facilities with flexible consultation sessions until their artwork is complete. Researchers or students may stay longer to delve deeper into the creative process of batik or explore additional programs offered by the Culture House. We recommend emailing us with your expectations and goals so we can discuss how best to tailor the residency to your needs.
Our art programs follow the Javanese concept of Ngèlmu Iku Kelakonè Kanti Laku, which directly translates to "learning by doing," and is structured around three modules: Laku (learning), Ngelmu (knowledge), and Kelakon (synthesis). For more details, please refer to the description of our art programs. We offer workshops for programs lasting 3-7 days and residencies for those extending beyond one week.
It depends on your objective. A three-day workshop is the minimum duration we recommend, as you will gain philosophical knowledge about batik and its creative process on the first day and then learn the technical aspects in the remaining time. For a more comprehensive experience that provides a foundation for further exploration, we recommend participating for at least three days, up to a week. Programs extending beyond seven days are considered residency programs.
Not at all. We have had participants who were writers, performers, students, photographers, researchers, etc. We believe that as long as you have a creative itch and curiosity to learn about culture and arts, our programs will be relevant and enjoyable for you.
We operate as a culture house and not a business entity, so prices are not always fixed. We encourage you to email us with your expectations and goals from our programs. We will then tailor a program to fit these objectives and inform you about the cost. We are open to discussing possible joint efforts for funding or providing discounts if you are an active student looking to complete your studies by working with us.
Our art programs are based on a curriculum developed by contemporary fiber artists Agus Ismoyo and Nia Fliam, drawing from traditional knowledge systems used in batik. Therefore, our art programs do not focus solely on creating your own batik but emphasize the creative process used through the medium of batik.
