MJA Nashir
MJA Nashir, born in Batang on 8 September 1973, is a cultural and traditional arts activist dedicated to preserving Indonesian heritage. After studying Sociology at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, he began his career as a journalist and later worked in the film and advertising industry in Jakarta. Nashir's passion for cultural documentation led him to work with communities in Tana Toraja and collaborate with Dutch-Canadian anthropologist Sandra Niessen in Tano Batak, North Sumatra, focusing on traditional Batak weaving, photography, documentary films, and book writing.
In 2015, Nashir founded the Batang Heritage community to honor his hometown. He now works independently as a filmmaker, photographer, writer, and cultural activist. His notable documentaries include “Emergency Call For Simalungun Weaving” (2020), “Ki Sagio Master Puppet Maker of Yogyakarta” (2020), “A Cultural Journey to India” (2019), “Mountain Nyadran” (2018), and “Rangsa Ni Tonun” (2012), which has been screened internationally. Nashir's ongoing dedication ensures the preservation and growth of Indonesia's rich cultural heritage.
